Amerlan rolled in her sleep trying to get comfortable. These many weeks of sleeping on the sands had taken its toll on her. She longed for a warm bed to sleep in. Deciding to call it a bust she sat up and stretched. Many of her joins popping uncomfortably. Patting her hand down she searched for the Osidae cage that always sat beside her. She didn't trust Pandora, the jagged Indigo. That thing rattled about at all hours and loved to try and get the Saydar if they wandered too close.
Though no matter where she blindly patted her hand she couldn't find the cage. Rolling over she examined the area. Where there should have been a cage there was nothing, and where there should be nothing five feet away there was an empty cage. Shooting up like lightning she looked around for the Osidae. With a creeping chill she spotted something on the wall of the Nexus.
Walking over very slowly she found the dead body, or rather parts of a Saydar. She almost panicked and rushed to make sure all her's were okay when she realized this one was far to big. Easily full grown and by the age of the bones left sticking out, quite old. The head down to the torso was covered in gold crystal and if she looked carefully enough she could spot the smooth gold Amira within. Like wise running parallel to the gold gemstone the ribs were encased in the smooth magenta crystal of Skittles. In a few spots you could even see where a different color of crystal had formed from where the two colors meshed. The legs of the dead Saydar were left bare and dangling from the wall. How they had gotten it up there was a mystery to her.
It was then that a wave of stink hit her. "What in the." Her sentence stuck in her throat as she saw another body on the wall covered in jagged indigo crystal. there was no mistaking the handy work of Pandora. She had no idea what kind of animal it had been, but from the fluid seeping down the wall it had obviously been alive. What a gross atrocity the Osidae had made. It could have used something dead like the other two, but no, it just had to go and kill something. Most of the body was already encased in crystal, but a few parts stuck out here and there. It resembled a very gross crypt. Very intricate, but it stank of death. She knew better than to approach the nest of the jagged Osidae and instead opted to call out for Seroth.
"I think I may need a bit of help over here. The Osidea seem to think it's breeding time! Will you let the others know to bring their Osidae? I doubt we'll be able to do anything with them until they've laid their eggs and they've hatched." She called out over the bond.
A wave of agreement met her from Seroth. Shouting as loud as he could to the other Dragons he called out to any who's bonded may have Osidae who could help them.

Princess seemed a bit more jumpy than usual as Duzell gingerly placed food inside his cage. For once the Osidae seemed to have no interest in food or trying to bite Duzell and was instead focusing all his energy on attempting to escape his tiny cell. Duzell shook his head. He had long given up on trying to understand his volatile pet. He turned to give some food to Hel and about had a heart attack. The jagged cream Osidae was halfway across the Nexus and seemed to be on a mission. What was even stranger was that his two smooth males which usually avoided her cage like the plague were trailing right after her. Picking up Princess' cage Duzell followed the group to a strange looking mound of crystal which was covered in grainy spider silk leaning up against one of the walls. Duzell started at the crystalline structure and slowly realized that it must have been a creature at some point. It looked a bit like a small Kurbok. A foal perhaps? Whatever it had been, it was Hel's nest now. He could see her sitting inside, piloting thin pieces of silk and expertly landing them on the still bare spots of her nest. Both Fredrick and Lyle were running back and forth between it and two other nearby nests. He saw Amerlan staring at one of the other nests and walked over.
"So, this is new." He said, gesturing to the Saydars her Osidae had converted into new homes. "Yours ever done anything like this before? Cause this is uncharted territory for me." He looked down at the squirming cage in his hand. Princess was glowing brighter than he had ever seen before and was desperately biting at the bars of the cage. He knelt down and placed Princess’ cage on the ground. Looking up at Amerlan he sighed. “If I die, tell Nysath he’s a pain in the ass.” He opened Princess’ cage and the spider lept out. It took one look at Duzell and Amerlan and then ran over to join Fredrick and Lyle in running back and forth between nests. Finally, they stopped at the large indigo nest and began doing what looked like a complicated dance. Duzell looked over at Amerlan. “Now that is just odd. How long do you think that will be going on?”

Back at their nook of the Nexus, Leyora and friends had just gotten settled in from their excursion in the grove, which had unwitting caused their motley family to grow by two more members. It seemed the rabbit, Skipper was still living up to his name, even long after recovering from trying to keep up with a dragon. He was merrily skipping about and kicking up dust into the faces of Ayman and Tavor. Leyora was getting quite worried about her less than charming new friend, though. While Rasmus was enjoying recounting for the hundredth time of how he had captured the osidae, Leyora actually opened the pouch to check on the crystalline bug. Much to her surprise and horror, however, the spider was gone! "Guys we have a serious problem. Rasmus's 'trophy' is missing." "Not much of a loss really. Now if it were a smooth one, I might be concerned for its well being." "It is a potential hazard if we have somehow lost her out here where our neighbors could be exposed to her mean streak." "There is that. Let's start the search, then." Though the bicorn seemed testy with the dragon, there were notes of genuine concern for those around him, in Cyrus's voice.
Each of the sentient creatures split up and went looking for their eight legged shard of trouble. Leyora also took off in a separate direction; on that led her to a familiar face. When she saw that the gentleman was following spiders across the sand, she sent a message through her bonds to stop looking, because she was certain she had a fairly reliable lead. She nodded a quiet greeting to Duzell, being too focus, for now, on what the osidae were up to. Once they reached the nests, it donned on her what was happening, but she still had yet to find her osidae. Eventually she spotted another corpse stuck to the wall in a glowing almost pink crystal mess. Though she was still working on her nest, it was clear she was somewhat of a minimalist by design. Leyora hoped that meant there would likely be only very few eggs, but she wasn't going to hold her breath. Actually holding her breath might have been the wise choice, as the pload the spider was nesting in was already beginning to stink!
"Urgh that is just charming. You are a real sweetheart, aren't you? Ha! That will be your name, Sweetheart; a complete reversal of what you really are." It seemed like a perversely poetic name, at least to her. Leyora shuddered as she looked at the actual nest again. She decided she was quite glad that Tavor had somehow avoided the twisted sense of nesting fashion that these bizarre bugs had. Glancing at the other nests, she had to admit that despite the dead animals, the colors of the nests were interesting; maybe in part because they were the same colors as the osidae, themselves. "I've never seen anything like this, before, either. It is equal parts creepy and fascinating, don't you think?"

Amerlan watched very confused as some much smaller, so obviously male Osidae skittered over and ran between each of the five ests. Wait, five? It seemed as though two other female Osidae had also created nests along the wall. The farthest nest down was even glowing! She hadn't seen any glowing Osidae before, maybe it wasn't one?
As she was about to investigate the other nests she saw Duzell approaching at a fast pace. Waving to him she waited until he was closer to speak. Shaking her head in response to his question she replied, "No, I've never seen any of them do this before. Not only that Pandora left all of the Saydar chicks alone. She's been trying to get them ever since I brought her home. Instead she went after, well I don't really know." Gesturing helplessly towards the thing that had once been an animal. "It was alive that's for certain." Wrinkling her nose and the still slightly oozing, gem covered carcass. "I agree Leyora. I'm glad Amira and Skittles didn't feel the need to kill something as well."
Amerlan watched in fascination as the males kept on dancing, one trailing after the other in their own unique dances. She giggled quietly to herself. Watching them dance was almost like watching a comedy. She resisted putting them in top hats and coats lest she complete die of giggles. Composing her self she went back to watching them. "I wonder when they'll stop, or. Oh! Pandora what are you doing?"
Pandora came to the opening of her stinking nest, and odor she rather liked, fresh kill was the best. Observing the males she watched as they danced and danced. If she had been cruel she may have let them go on all night, but she wanted her eggs, and she wanted them now. Slowly she began to dance, mimicking the dance of Lyle. Her dance was more subdued than his, but it was clear that she wished for him to be the father of her children. Retreating to the back of the nest she waited for the male to arrive.
"Well wasn't that romantic. Dance to mate eh." Elbowing Duzell gently she chuckled, "So does this make us in-laws or something?"
She could hear the thudding of some very large paws coming closer and closer. Without and time to turn around Cinth tackled her to the ground. Landing with an oof she was successfully flattened. The Dragon had gained his brown coloring and was now all limbs. He came up to her shoulder now and had already been working on his flying. "Amerlan! I thought you were dead! I was so worried!" The Dragon whined and keened as he kept her still flattened to the ground.
"Get off me you big lug! You're too big to do that!" Groaning she sat up as he got off of her. Shooting him a glare she continued, "Besides, wouldn't you know if I had died? Bond remember?" She stood and dusted off the sand that had collected on her.
Grinning sheepishly the Dragon tried to pull off a smile. "So what are we doing here anyways? Ooh Osidae breeding! Are there going to be babies? Seroth will be excited for babies."

Duzell watched the strange exchange between the Osidae with a mix of horror and fascination. The dance was quite hilarious to watch, with the spiders jumping around and wiggling. He was still a bit wary that Hel or Princess would lose interest in their dancing and decide to go back to their previous favorite activites, namely the destruction of everything that was not a jagged Osidae. One of Amerlan’s Osidae came to the entrance of her nest and began to dance. After a few seconds Lyle stopped dancing and began climbing up the nest. As he disappeared into the dark nest Duzell turned to Amerlan. “I hope she doesn’t eat him or leave him disabled or anything.”
Seeing that Pandora had chosen a mate, Fredrick and Princess turned their attention to the joint nest of Amira and Skittles and began their dance anew. Duzell sighed. It looked like they might be there for a while. He glanced back at Pandora’s nest and started thinking about what the babies would even be like. Would they be as mean as their mother, or take after their father and be gentle. Was there some sort of mix? He would certainly appreciate some sort of instruction manual, but unfortunately pets did not come with any kind of helpful hints booklet. It would seem that uncertainty was a mandatory part of the pet owning process. “So, Amerlan, what are we even going to do with a bunch of baby spiders? Keep ‘em? Sell ‘em? Squish ‘em?” Duzell wasn't usually a fan of killing, well, anything. He might make an exception for jagged spider babies though.
Hel poked her head out of her nest. She had just finished setting it up to make it perfect. The completely crystallized Kurbok fawn was now strewn with thin layers of spider silk. She stared down at where the males were supposed to be and hissed when she saw nothing there. She wanted them to dance for her and she wanted it now! Had she been more intelligent she would perhaps thought about the fact the other females had built their nests first, but Hel was not the type to use reason, or possess patience. Were it any other time she would have climbed down and taught those boys a lesson but her instincts demanded that she not leave her nest. Hissing once more she retreated in her nest to wait for the males to arrive and show her the attention she knew she deserved.
Duzell walked over to check on Hel and her nest. Seeing her hissing and sputtering in the entrance of her nest and decided to walk right on by. He continued walking until he saw Leyora staring at a light pink nest. “Wow, I didn’t know you even had an Osidae. Yours the nice kind or the “eat your face” kind? Guess they all went into heat at the same time? That’s going to be fun. The nests sure are pretty for something so nasty.” He smiled at her. “So, spider babies? That’ll be fun, right?”

Amira and Skittles were both extremely happy. They both thought they each had two suitors, not really realizing the other was in a nest right next door. Gleefully both spiders began to dance to the tune of one of the males. Thankfully both females were interested in a different male. Beckoning eagerly to the jagged Princess Amira mirrored his dance. Though she seemed much more frantic and fast paced, she wanted that male right now. Not as eagerly as Amira, Skittles danced for Fredrick. She was kind of glad the other male who had been dancing had left. She wanted babies, not to kill an unwanted suitor.
Raising her eyebrow at Lyle Amerlan was impressed. If she had been a male she would have run from that witch of an Osidae without a second thought. The other two spiders where now dancing their funny jig for her other two females. She was certain there was an idiom about this somewhere, but she couldn't quite remember it. Pushing that thought out she replied to Duzell, "I'd like to keep a few, and of course your welcome to any of the babies that catch your eye." She had assumed that this would be the arrangement, but wanted to make sure both of them were on the same page.

Absently, Leyora nodded her agreement with Amerlan. She had no idea which spider was which but it seemed reasonable to her that the ones she spoke of where amongst the males that had started quite the entertaining little dance show. She wasn't sure which amused her more, though; the thought of males dancing to impress the females, or that there seemed to be a few different varieties mating together. She had just assumed that all the osidae glowed and had an evil look to them. Many of the bugs here, though also had a much more smooth build to them.
She stifled a chuckle at the thought of Duzell and Amerlan being in-laws be questionable breeding rituals. Glancing back at Sweetheart's nest she wondered at the seemingly anti-social osidae that was still diligently building her nest inside the crystallized pload. Surely the cranky creature would have to come out soon, or what would be the point behind the gory nest. If not for the crystallization, the hollowed out body might completely creep her out. Instead, however, the dances that the osidae put on fascinated her to the point of daydreaming... or maybe she was just tired. The dances did seem to take an awfully long time as the males made their rounds with nearly all the females. Still, Sweetheart stubbornly fiddled with her nest. Occasionally she poked her face out of the hole long enough to watch the males for a moment before diving back inside her pload, sweet pload.
The puppy-like attack of the young dragon on Amerlan snapped Leyora out of her thoughts and made her smile. Soon after, she heard Duzell talking about what to do the the osidae and that made her wonder too. Without really thinking about how it sounded, after Duzell mentioned squishing the spiders, Leyora mused out loud, "What I wouldn't give to be able to draw in so many colors as this things seem to come in. Do you suppose that they breed true to their parenting, or mix colors like paint?" She was thinking to herself that with the right combination a person might be able to breed perfect colors rich in glowing luster. She wrinkled her nose, though, because she wondered how a person would farm colors to draw with, without harming the unusual creatures.
Glancing over her shoulder at Duzell, Leyora huffed and answered, "Rasmus just caught her late yesterday afternoon. Judging from the fight she got into with a local... uh winged rabbit, my bets are that she eats face. Unless that is the norm for a spider in heat?" She sighed and went on. "We had her in a breathable pouch until we could get a cage built, but she was gone before we ever finished, apparently. I really hope a pload is all Sweetheart has killed since I brought her home." For that matter she wondered what kind of setup she was going to have to come up with in order to safely contain her wicked little creature and its spawn. Smiling back to Duzell, she answered, "Maybe..., " in a doubtful tone.
Finally, it seemed Sweetheart was finished puttering around in her nest. She skittered up to the opening and pranced around in a sudden fit of impatience. Having watched the males dances in brief spurts while building her nest, it seemed she had already made her mind up which she desires as a mate. She began picking and scratching at the nest, trying to get Princess's attention. The fellow glowing osidae would be hers even if she had to wait for him to finish with the other female first.

Like two commandos on a mission Princess and Fredrick raced towards the nests of the females that had danced towards them. The disappeared inside just as Lyle wandered out of Pandora’s nest. Duzell sighed in relief. Lyle looked no worse for wear, despite having just emerged from a jagged female’s lair. Lyle paused momentarily in front of Skittles and Amira’s nests but sensing they were already occupied quickly moved to begin dancing in front of Sweetheart’s pink pload.
Duzell looked up from the nest and nodded to Amerlan. “Sounds good to me. Not that I need more spiders, but we can’t just have them running loose everywhere. Maybe some of the others will want some? Not that I’d give away your spiders. I just can’t imagine try to deal with too many more.” He chuckled. “Particularly if they’re as mean as Princess. Although if they are we can just stick them in cages.” He turned back to Leyora. “Only some of them are mean, luckily. Pointy ones want to kill you, smooth ones want to sleep in your pocket, at least mine do. If you still need a cage for…umm, Sweetheart, I’m sure I can cobble something together. I mean, I don’t have many tools here and I’ve never built a cage before but it can’tbe too much harder that building book shelves so I can give it a go if you want.”
While Duzell was still blabbering on about Osidae cages Princess and Fredrick had emerged from the smooth females’ nests nearly at the same time. They gazed around the Nexus, trying to decide which nest to try next. Spying Lyle in front of a pink pload they made their way over there to join his dance. None of them realized that one particular Osidae had already caught her eye.

Leyora nodded silent agreement with Duzell and Amerlan about trading and selling osidae. She was certain that she did not want too terribly many of the strange arachnids, either. "I hope there are not too many offspring, though. I would hate to see an evacuation of the Nexus due to an infestation before everyone is prepared to move into town."
Listening to Duzell about temperaments and cages, she nodded again. "I have a feeling I will need a lot in the way of cages or some sort of shelters and not just for spiders, especially when we pick our homes in town. Have you noticed the echee have been acting strangely lately, too?" Her own brown female was even more moody than usual and seemed to be getting fat. She would deal with that when the time came, though. Right now, figuring out what to do about osidae was her main priority. Well, that, and seeing to it that all of her pets and bonds were well fed and rested. It was beginning to look like this would take awhile, yet.
Sweetheart's glow seemed even more bright as one by one the male osidae began approaching her nest, dancing away. One by one she also waved her front legs threateningly at the males that she had no interest in until they got the hint and backed away. she would not kill unless necessary now, because she was far more interested in eggs than anything else. Fortunately none of the males gave her a reason to maim them, either. Eagerly, she joined in Princess's dance, meticulously mimicking his every move. The dance itself was not a long one, but the time to be spent inside the nest was sure to take awhile if the blushing wench had her way of it.

With no hesitation Princess bounded into the blindingly pink nest. Duzell frowned and turned to Leyora. “A match made in glowly spider hell I guess.” The other two spiders were already bounding off to dance in front of Hel’s nest. She fixed an acidic glare at the two males. She had wanted the Osidae male that was as fierce as her but the need to mate was too strong now. If it was not then the other males would not have held a candle to Princess in her mind. But she would not be waiting until the other female was done with him. Hissing angrily, both at having her male stolen and being forced to wait until last, she watched as the two smooth males danced for her. Finally she began to mimic Fredrick’s fast and frantic dance. Fredrick approached her nest with a bit more caution but soon he had disappeared into its depths as well. As there were no more females in the area Lyle ceased his continuous dancing and went off to find a nice cool area for a nap. A bit later Fredrick and Princess, having been kicked out of the nests by the females, went off to do the same. A few hours later the females began abandoning their nests, as if forgetting they had built them in the first place.
For about two weeks the nests stood silent, though not empty, like crystallized promises of what was to come. Then skittering sounds could be heard coming from the depths of the nest. Brave souls could get close enough and see shapes moving about inside. Then, slowly, spiderlings began to emerge from the nests. Not quite as large as their parents, these Osidae were still growing. They climbed all over the nests and began preparing large silk slings that would allow the wind take them wherever it pleased. Duzell picked up one of the smooth green spiders that had emerged from Hel’s nest. It stood completely motionless at first, trying to understand her new environment. Then she began to climb around Duzell. He called excitedly to Leyora and Amerlan. “Look, babies! Better come grab them before they float away.” Spying some jagged Osidae climbing out of Sweethearts nest he ran over to grab some of the cages he had been building for the past few weeks. “Looks like we’re going to need these. There’s a lot more here than I expected. Want to see if any of the other riders want some spiders?”
