Duzell stood on the beach, listening to the Fulmar and other sea birds as they screeched and circled overhead. The waves gently crashed against the sand and the sun shone down on him. Duzell shed his coat and boots and set them a ways off from the hoard of playful creatures he had brought along with him on his beach trip. Saint was dashing to and fro chasing after the Echee who were much more concerned with collectiong shells for their nests than they were about the Eld’rani. Cecil and Carlos were fighting over a particularly large shell when Saint solved the arguemnet by snatching it and running off. Both Echee squeaked in righteous fury and chased after the mischievous Eld’rani. Duzell sat down on the sand and let out a contented sigh. A beach day had been just what the group needed to keep them from falling into a static routine. Glancing around to make sure that no one was trying to eat each other Duzell closed his eyes and lay back against the sand.
Duzell’s peaceful relaxing was suddenly interrupted by a frigid cloud hovering directly over his chest. Orryx had been swimming up and down the shore, chatting excitedly about everything he saw. Apparently he had gotten bored, since he had decided it was much more interesting to float right above Duzell and chat there instead. Have you been in the water yet? You should try it. It’s warm. Saint won’t go in. He’d rather play with the Echee than go get the thing. I told him to go get it, but he never listens to me. He doesn’t listen to you either but at least…
Duzell groaned and sat up. He loved Orryx, but the Spirit Squid was like a chatter dispenser. He would talk all day if Duzell let him. “What are you talking about Orryx? What thing?” Oh, over here. The thing floating in the water. Duzell followed the spirit squid over to the waterline. About a foot out a bottle was bobbing up and down on the waves. Duzell walked over and picked it up. Orryx swam in circles aroud Duzell and the bottle. Ooh, is it interesting? Is it dangerous? “It’s a bottle; looks like there’s something inside.” Prying the cork from the bottle, Duzell unrolled what appeared to be a treasure map. The crude drawing seemed to depict the beach area where they were standing, down to some scarily accurate details. In the picture he could see himself and Orryx standing on a spot labeled “Start Here!” From there a dotted line ran down the beach, past a drawing of Saint and the Echee, and ended in a big red X.
Duzell stared at the map warily. After a minute of contemplation he shrugged, after all stranger things had been known to happen around here. Turning to Orryx he smiled. “What do you say, in the mood for a treasure hunt?” Ooh, yes. Yes please. Let’s go find treasure. Duzell glanced back at the map and started walking towards his “treasure” whatever that might be.
