Duzell stood up and stretched; his arms ached from the constant motion of building pens and stables out back of the inn. The guests were going to need some place to house their larger bonds if they were staying for the night. Fortunately the gods had stocked the inn with most everything he and Leyora would need and Duzell’s small talents in construction had so far been enough to make up for the rest. Rubbing his sore arms Duzell decided to take a short break and see if Leyora needed anything from him. He wandered back inside and looked around for Leyora. They had finished setting up the main room and had gone their separate ways. Duzell had gone outside and Leyora had… Oh yeah, Leyora had wanted to assess the kitchen. Duzell had lasted all of two minutes in the kitchen before Leyora tossed him right back out. Apparently he had an impressive knack for standing right where Leyora was trying to work. By the time he made his escape Duzell was certain even Chubs was shooting him dirty looks. Well, that left him only two options; he could either go back outside and finish working or he could go work on setting up the only part of the inn that he and Leyora had yet to venture into: the attic. It was hot as hell outside so Duzell’s mind was practically made up for him. Duzell curved around and climbed the staircase to the second floor and pulled down the ladder leading to the attic. As he pushed the hatch open he heard a weird skittering sound from inside the room. Now a bit apprehensive Duzell entered the attic and stared at the last thing he was expecting. The attic was entirely covered in huge multicolored crystals. The crystals were littered with holes, in and out of which skittered dozens of crystal spiders. Osidae had completely taken over the inn’s attic and were using it as some kind of communal nest. The spiders all dashed away from the hatch as Duzell climbed into the room. He stared dumbly at the nests too stunned to even think of what to do. He was startled back into action as a smooth bright red Osidae dropped down on his shoulder. With a more dramatic and less masculine scream than Duzell would like to admit he brushed it off and leaned back down through the hatch. “Umm Leyora? I might need some help up here. Unless we want our inn to have a cheap spider gimmick we are going to need to see if some people around town want some spiders.” Duzell chuckled to himself. “Spiders! That’ll be a great opening for our inn.” ooc: 400 word challenge, 440 words: dramatic, curve, gimmick Notes: Everyone who joins will automatically receive one Osidae Additional Osidae will be gained through participation Aka: participation is keyThat said, don't worry about missing a post between mine as I will be posting a bit more often than I did in Echee in order to allow the story to keep moving. Amerlan had been lounging in a tree watching her two small dragonlings bicker back and forth. Even since Aelluth had hatched on the sands she had acted like she owned the place. Strutting this way and that she almost had the two older males under her thumb, even if they only appeased her to make their own lives easier, but it was all ruined when Lianth showed up. Pretty little Lianth just had to catch the eye's of the males with her blue hide, though her hatchling white still acted as a film diluting most of the color.
Truthfully Amerlan was a little bit disgusted at the way the two females went at it sometimes. Often it was just petty squabbles, but a few incidents had turned rather nasty. Lianth still sported the gash on her flank from where Aulluth's tooth had pierced her.
Amerlan was ready to pop a gasket today. It was damn hot and the two females were making her head hurt. A nice cold drink would do her good, but since the town was barely up and running she hadn't had the chance to see what beverages the Gods might have left in stock. Anything would be better than sitting here all day.
Scurrying down the tree Amerlan set her feet back on the ground and began the short trek to the Inn. Surely Duzell and Leyora would have something available. Though she didn't have any coin to offer, perhaps the two of them would be up for a bargain. Nodding to herself she then called over her shoulder to the hatchlings. "Come if you like, but I better not here an insult come out of either of your mouths until I'm good and sated. Got that?"
The two females instantly shut their mouths. Fighting with each other was all fine and well in their eyes, but Amerlan was a different beast. He wrath was more akin to an angry bear than a tiny Elfling.
The sun beating down on Amerlan has caused a fine sheen of sweat to cover her. She almost praised the gods when she entered the cool shade of the inn. "Leyora? Duzell? Either of you two here?" She called out.
The two hatchlings entered the inn with Amerlan, carefully avoiding their bonded and instead picked out a nice perch in a corner to rest. Even they had to admit being in the shade felt nice. Soon the two of them were in a light slumber, thoughts of bickering set aside for now.
Amerlan was just about to set herself at a table when she heard Duzell call for Leyora from up above. Spiders? I wonder if they're the pretty crystal ones, and not some hairy creepy things. Deciding to find out for herself Amerlan cautiously walked up the stairs to where she heard Duzell calling from. From her vantage point she could just see the flash of some bright crystal. Grinning she called up to Duzell, "Any room for another up there?"

Exploring the town had turned into a regular habit for Taki, as she liked to know her way around any place she was at very well. In some cases, this let her get to where she needed to go quickly, while in other, darker moments this had actually saved her life and the life of her then-traveling companions. Rather logically - a term that many on her world would have never attributed to Myrgwae but actually could suit them quite well at times - she picked a different area every couple of days and explored it thoroughly until she knew every alley and lane like the back of her hand.
This particular set of streets to be learned happened to include the inn. She could tell it was an inn even before she could see the sign proclaiming such, due to its height and construction. Very few buildings she could think of would have more than one story in a town!
But it was as she drew near and heard the voices speaking that her curiosity grew. Spiders? She'd encountered spiders before, of all various shapes and sizes on her travels. Maybe her experience would be of help, if they were in need of it. Entering the front door, she softly called out.
*Hello? Anyone here? I thought I heard something.*

Leyora was in heaven. There was simply no other way to put it. She was standing in the middle of a fully stocked kitchen and it was hers for the cooking. She would have to apologize to Duzell later for running him off, but right now she was busy flitting back and forth to see what ingredients she had to work with so that she could cook up a sufficient "thank you" meal for him letting her work here. She was still a little apprehensive about having a job where she's have to be more social, but having animal friends that actually could talk to her, was helping her improve in that area. If she could coexist with them so easily, how hard could it be to become more friendly with her fellow humanoids?
This world really was starting to feel like home. It was a lot different from her old home with its unusual flora and fauna and cultural customs. Although for all the differences, there were many similarities starting to crop up, not that that was a bad thing. Everyone just needed some time before their natural talents started showing through. Now, with the town given to them, they were able to grow as humans and as a community. Soon, she would have to pick out a house. She couldn't live like a vagabond forever, though she had to admit, she was becoming accustomed to it. She was going to miss the Nexus, though Eyrdith was quick to point out that there would be plenty of chances to visit there, since that was the dragons' main dwelling. Leyora stubbornly insisted that there would be a shelter near whatever house she chose so that Eyrdith could stay there when she wanted or needed to, though.
A scream and some commotion at the front entrance broke up any further discussion between dragon and rider. Dropping the eggs she had intended on using in a cake, Leyora scrambled out of the kitchen and went to see what the noise was about. Chubs, who was now covered in yellow droplets of egg, chittered furiously and took advantage of the moment to steal a veggies from the salad bowl.
Rounding the corner, Leyora tried to dust some of the flour off of the neat pale blue apron she had found in the kitchen. she brushed the hair out of her face, smearing a little flour on her cheek in the process and answered, "Amerlan? I'm here. Debatable about Duzell after that scream, though. Best see if he is alright." She was genuinely concerned though she was trying to play it off as a joke. At the mention of spiders she had begun to worry that theirs had escaped again. Little did she know...
Glancing around the inn's lobby she saw the dragons that were already asleep and wondered to herself if they might have to make some expansions to accommodate everyone's animal companions. Not that she minded; the more the merrier was her motto when it came to such matters. She was just about to follow Amerlan up the stairs when another visitor took Leyora by surprise, "Oh! Hello kitty! I didn't hear you come in. Do come in. It seems we may be about to embark upon a spidery adventure, if you'd care to join us." She put on her best hostess smile and hoped that didn't sound as strange out loud as it did in her head.

At about the same time Leyora was bustling about in the inn's kitchen, Terris was bustling about in the smaller, but equally well-stocked kitchen in the tavern. While he was not ready to open the tavern yet, due to some minor damages inflicted on the building by an angry weasel, he knew Duzell and Leyora were getting ready to open the inn, and thought a few opening day treats would be in order, and so it was, that on this fine, sunny morning, Terris was just about ready to take four large pies out of an even larger oven.
Whisper watched the events with an interest akin to obsession, and when the pies were extracted and put on a cleared space on the kitchen bench, he licked his lips and stalked forward.
The bristles of the broom struck his backside before he even knew what was happening, and he puffed himself up, all his hair standing on end, his spines clearly visible.
"Don't you even think about touching those pies, you naughty thing! They are not for you, and you just ate anyway. I swear, you would eat until you made yourself sick if I'd let you" The eld'rani shot Terris an icy blue glare and stalked away toward the the soft feather bed in the reception area. If Terris was not going to let him partake of the baked goods, he'd sleep a while.
Terris didn't trust that the cat wouldn't come back if he left the pies where they were to cool, so, very carefully, he put them in their boxes, then stacked the boxes in a large leather bag, which he slung over his shoulder. He then began the short journey to the Inn. The pies could cool in the kitchen there, away from greedy eld'rani.
Just as he arrived, Terris had heard a distinctly feminine scream, and moved to run inside. Obviously Leyora was in some kind of trouble, and needed rescuing!
"Where are you? What needs killing?" he called out, trying to find the direction of the danger in the unfamilliar building as he stalked through the rooms, swords drawn (at some point he had carefully deposited the bag with the pies in it inside the front door).
As the initial adrenaline rush flowed out of him, and he was able to think clearly, he realised that he had probably over-reacted to the screaming and, somewhat sheepishly, sheathed his swords, though one hand always remained on the hilt as he moved from room to room, his worry growing each time he found nothing.
It dawned on him fairly quickly that the first place he should have checked was the one place he didnt, and, sighing to himself at his blatant stupidity, and muttering about how he would never have overlooked something so obvious when he was at the service of the king, he made his way to the kitchen.
No dreaded monster awaited him there, no beast needed slaying, all he saw was Leyora and Duzell talking quietly about...what? Spiders?
"Did someone say spiders?" he asked them.
"Show me where and I'll crush the little buggers! Oh, and there's an apple, cherry, peach and berry pie out by the front door, an opening day present for the Inn, I left them there when I heard a woman screaming, thought there was trouble." he blathered looking more than a little embarrassed.

Cain wouldn't have known there was trouble if it were not for his four echee and Able. Apparently there had been exploring the town, looking for, what else but food. Duzell's high pitched scream (Able had let out a low howl of his own at the frequency hurt his ears), came just as they were passing by the inn. Why?! I do not like this! He was preaching to deaf ears though as all the echee had scampered inside the inn after the man in the shiny armor. They remembered you! What was in the not so shiny bag?
Well, as Terris ran in and sat his bag on the floor, Gambit scampered in and started to undo the bag. Squeaking in happiness, he got his messages across as Hemo and Ligament took one pie while he and Brains took another. Able came in just as they were leaving and snagged the bag with the last pie in it. Surely it must be for them. It was just left out with no one to watch it. Surely anyone could take them. Right? Right.
Cain wasn't so sure about that though. You couldn't just sail into a house or place of business and just take their stuff. It wasn't right. Though by the time he learned of this, each echee and Able had already taken a bit and was trying to share with the saydar. Even Garland was helping by eating the pie tins. Sighing, Cain trudged into town to go apologize to Duzell and Leyora.
He assumed they were Leyora's pies given all he had gotten out of his friends were they found them at the inn.
Entering the kitchen, he caught the tail end of the conversations. "Trouble? Leyora? Duzell? Is everything okay?" He moved to try and look up into the attic at the innkeeper before turning a questioning head tilt at Leyora. "Anything I can do to help out? Also. Sorry about the pies you made Leyora. I'm afraid some of my creatures here took them and decided to share the love among those that weren't there." Yes. He was apologizing to the wrong cook. Oops.

Arlene frowned at the message a bit. While a spider or a few would be appreciated to keep the insect population down, she still had to shake off her previous life's memories that the Garou had believed the Weaver who took the form of a spider spirit with her children caused humanity to be too rigid. She was the creator of order and had gone mad enough she was trying to impose order upon her sister Wyld. Ah well worst came to worst, she'd be requesting a meal she didn't have to cook herself if she couldn't bring herself to bring any home. She picked up Amon who had been sleeping to take the spirit beast with her. He was slowly strengthening, but she was still doing the heavy lifting on them touching.
She knocked lightly upon the door of the inn not comfortable with just barging in. She put the growing pup down on the stoop and brushed off her apron swallowing hard. If these were venomous she probably had to be here anyways for treatment. She honestly had no clue if they would even follow the rule that she knew of that bright is danger. Maybe this wouldn't take too long maybe? Then again this would probably be a lively night.

Duzell felt more Osidae skittering across his boots and he could hear them all around him. Like a heretic in church, Duzell did not want to spend one more second in the dark attic than necessary. He would be back, with proper lighting this time. He turned to go back through the hatch and blinked at the large crowd that had somehow managed to gather around the ladder to the attic. Funny, he had thought he was just calling for Leyora, not an entire town council. He was more than a little embarrassed at Terris running into the inn, swords drawn, to save him like he was some damsel in distress. Face slightly red he swung down onto the ladder and climbed down to join the group.
Duzell sighed and turned to Cain. "A bit of trouble, though nothing too major. We seem to have been invaded by Osidae. Obviously we can't just leave them here. Umm, I don't suppose any of you want some? They do make great pets, well, the smooth ones do anyway." Duzell nodded to Amerlan. "There should be room up there, for all of us actually if you don't mind getting to know each other a bit closer. Room's not the issue. The issue is that there is a huge nest of Osidae in my attic. It was a bit dark, so I couldn't tell if they were smooth or jagged so it could be dangerous." He glared at Terris, not entirely fond of being mistaken for a girl. "Although I doubt we'll need swords, as close of quarters as it is up there you'd be more likely to stab one of us."
A knock at the door interrupted his train of thought. The host in him could not just leave whoever was at the door standing there. "One second everyone." He dashed downstairs and opened the door to see Arlene standing there. He probably looked a mess covered in spider silk and wild eyed as he yanked the door open. "Oh hi there. The inn isn't exactly open, but you're more than welcome to help with our spider problem if you'd like. We're right upstairs." Without waiting for a response he turned and headed for the stairs. He passed Taki in the front room and called out to her. "We're upstairs dealing with a bit of an infestation at the moment. You're welcome to stay here and relax, or you can come join us if you'd like." If his hurried offers did not alienate them then Duzell hoped he could count on two more spider catchers. He dashed up the stairs two at a time and ran back to the others.
Duzell rejoined the larger group gathered around the ladder and stared up into the attic. "Sorry about that. Now, if we're going to go up there we're going to need some better lighting. I don't want to be...surprised by another spider. Do we have more candles somewhere in the Inn? I can't remember where we put them. After we get some light we can head upstairs and take a better look at what we're dealing with"

Taki smiled cheerfully at Leoyra, thinking that she made a great first impression for a hostess in the inn. She was about to respond when the others came in with such startling speed that she jumped a bit, though looking past Terris and seeing the pie theft in process she was hard fought not to giggle.
*Um... if that's your bag, I think someone just took something from it.* It was only right that she tell him, even if it looked like there was little to be done about it, as fast as those little guys were. Then Duzell came down and explained everything to them.*I'd be glad to help!* It was hard to put-off a Myrgwae or insult them, and if indeed anyone did hurt their feelings, it passed very quickly with forgiveness quick on its heels. *Bad spiders that could hurt me typically stay away from me, well, at least they did back home. Here I don't know about.* She looked at her Bonded kitsune. *Tam'kar, maybe you had better stay down here. I don't think I could carry you up the ladder and climb myself.*
Alright! Tam'kar scampered over to bound up one stool and take a fluffy-tailed seat on the bar. I'll wait right here. Oh, hello! That last was chirped to some of the other bondeds in the room.
Hearing Duzell's comment about a light, and candles, made Taki start patting her dress pockets. *A light... a light... I know I had that - ah!* She pulled a palm-sized rock out of her pocket, and after rubbing it a bit to warm it up it gave off a soft candle's glow. *Maybe this'll help?* she offered, holding it out.

Arlene laughed and followed the voices to the bigger group. Her turquoise spirit animal shifting into a different breed of dog as if trying it on for size as he followed with paws too big for the rest of him tripping over his feet. At least, if he hit anything but his bonded, he slipped through but if he hit his bonded he wound up a sore head as if she was the only solid thing in his world. She cocked her head hearing the request for light. She wasn't going to make fun of his arachnophobia but she could give SOME more light. She rummaged in her belt pouch pulling out seeds for bioluminescent moss germinating them in her hands before placing some by the ladder. " I may be willing to help catch but remains to be seen if I can overcome something in my past enough to actually keep any. This should help some with the moss and not be dangerous for the wood beams on the darkness. Candles are all well and good but you need some for of container around it to protect the flame from greedily eating the wood. Oil lamps are usually a lot better than wax candles for light though." She stopped and thought. "Do you even have something to catch them in? A baited trap with a little chunk of meat or anything?"

"Cramped quarters are fine with me. I don't take up much space." Amerlan chuckled. "As long as some of them aren't like Pandora She's a real pain in the ass. Can't let that one out of it's cage. Speaking of cages, I don't suppose you have any lying around do you?" See the others pull out their light sources Amerlan had her own idea about what they could use. "I think I know someone who could also help out with some light."
Reaching through the bond she nudged the hatchling Artemis awake. Through the bond she spoke, "Could you come down to the inn? We need some extra light."
Scoffing Artemis sent a twinge of annoyance through the bond. "What am I? Your own personal torch? Seeing as I'm now up I might as well join you." Floating though the house and down the road she found the inn door open and quiet a crowd inside. Landing on Amerlan's shoulder she began to preen herself. "So what do you need me for anyways?"
"There are some Osidae up in the attic that need removing." Amerlan informed her.
Letting out an ear piercing screech Artemis voiced her fury. "What do you mean Osidae?! Those spiders?! No. Absolutely not. Im not going anywhere up there."
"What are you so afraid of? Its not like they can even touch you." Amerlan could have understood if Artemis was an Echee with a visceral fear of predators, but she's a Spirit Animal.
Huffing Artemis looked away. "Fine. I'll go. But I'm not leaving your shoulder under any circumstance."

Cain blinked at Taki's comment about the bag being Terris's. Oops. Apparently he might have just apologized to the wrong person. Before he could ask and if he was wrong, make amends, Duzell had come back down and was mentioning something about lights. "I don't really need them and if the space is too crowded, my head can just go up." He didn't see any problems with the spiders. Then again, he was probably one of the few who could survive their bite. "Want me to go up first and see it I can't try and corral them away from the opening for you all?"

Duzell was quite pleased at how helpful the group that had come running was turning out to be. Perhaps he might forgive Terris and Cain for calling his scream girlish after all. It seemed to have worked for getting them all together at least. He had to agree with Arlene, perhaps a fire would not be the best solution especially given how likely it would be that a spider would land on any one of them and cause them to jump. If they were too liberal with their use of flames they could cause the whole inn to burn down and while that would take care of their spider problem it was hardly the outcome Duzell was going for. Between Arlene’s moss, Taki’s stone and Artemis they probably had more than enough light for the attic. One problem solved, now on to the next one.
Duzell nodded to Arlene and Amerlan. “I have built a few cages actually, but not nearly enough to hold all of the Osidae that are up there. But, we may not need that many. You can just pick up any smooth ones you find. One second.” Duzell dashed back down stairs and grabbed Fredrick from where he was napping in one of the guest rooms. The sky blue Osidae hissed at being woken up and manhandled but calmed shortly after. Duzell ran back to the group. “See, completely harmless. Well, the smooth ones are.” He turned to Amerlan. “I remember your Pandora, she’s just as mean as my Princess. That’s what I’m most concerned about right now, is that there’s jagged Osidae up there.”
Duzell contemplated Cain’s suggestion for a moment. “They seemed to mostly clear away from the hatch when I opened it so I don’t know how much of a problem that is going to be. However if you want to climb up there and take a look I certainly won’t stop you. I’m not sure if their venom affects bones or not though so if they do and you get bit it’s your funeral. Or rather, your eternity and a sculpture. Either way, it probably won’t be fun.” Duzell turned and looked at the hatch to the attic. “So, who’s going first?”

Terris glared up at the hatch leading to the spider-infested room and clenched his teeth, his jaw tightening. There were few things he disliked more than spiders. It was not that they gave him the creeps, though he was not fond of the idea of any multilegged beastie crawling along his bare skin, it was more the issue of the poisonous bite...and just how poisonous that could be. He had seen men, battle-hardened and brave, die horribly, gurgling and screaming in pain and fear from a bite of the smallest, most innocuous looking spider, had seen limbs swell and rot from others, the bite wounds growing, festering, becoming so putrid that the only way to save the victim was to amputate...he had seen many horrible deaths at the jaws of arachnids, and so, fondness was not something he felt for the beasts.
He cast a wary eye on the spider in Duzell's hand, gave a slight shudder, though it seemed harmless enough and sighed, resigned to the fact that he was going up there to handle the creatures.
"If I cross paths with a jagged beast it will be dead before it has a chance to bite me" he rumbled fiercely, then tucked his pants into his sock to protect his legs, silently wishing he'd thought to construct some kind of adhesive tape to ensure they'd stay in place.
"Say, Duzell. What happens if those things bite you? Searing pain? Instant death? Slow spread of toxins? Do you know? I wouldn't be handling the beastie, friendly as it seems, unless you know exactly what it can do, and how to remedy it. Not that I dont trust the thing, but what if it startles? At least wear gloves, man!" he said, his babble more to distract from the fact that he was uneasy about going anywhere near the arachnids than anything else.

Listening to the others talk, Taki had to wonder if the jagged ones, which she assumed were the more dangerous, would actually hurt her. Wild animals, no matter how aggressive, tended to ignore her, if they didn’t flat out avoid her altogether. Now granted, that didn’t work for magically charmed or bonded creatures, well-trained animals, or any with remotely a humen-level intelligence. But these were spiders, right? The one he held, while incredibly pretty in her opinion, seemed docile enough, and gave no outward odd reaction when she approach a step to look closer at it.
She was also beginning to get the feeling that Terris really, really didn’t like spiders. His talk about the effects of their bite make her think that he’d seen some pretty bad stuff, and didn’t want to suffer the same. Not that she could blame him! The very fact that he was still willing to go up there made her admire him more for his concern. Every knight she’d ever met was a tower of iron will, and clearly Terris was no exception! Seeing him take the practical step of tucking his pants into his boots sparked an idea, and she rummaged into her pockets until she found some leather cord she’d picked up somewhere. While her pack rat-like habit might seem like madness to some, clearly, like now, it had its usefulness.
*Here. You can tie these around your boots to help if you want.* Then she looked at Duzell. *Um… I don’t know if this would work, but at least where I’m from wild animals, ones that aren’t affected by magic or smart, well they don’t really hurt me. Sometimes they just ignore me, or run away from me. I don’t really know why, but if you think we have the time to spare, you said you had a jagged one? We could check! If they won’t hurt me, I could handle those, while you take care of the others. If it works, anyhow.* The Myrgwae was trying to be as helpful as she could. While the thought of getting bitten, no matter how painless if may end up being, unnerved her a bit, she tried to mirror both Terris’ bravery and Duzell’s confidence in the smooth ones being non-aggressive. *If that’s the case, I could go up first, and make sure that none get too close!* While she waited for him to think over the suggestion, she tucked the glowing rock she held into the band of her hat, to free up her hands. Even if the jagged ones would act mean towards her, she could still pick up the smooth ones, and would likely need both hands for it. Briefly she wondered what to do with the smooth ones she did pick up. Maybe put them in a bag? Or what about in her hat? Certainly, being as small as she was, she wouldn’t be able to carry that many in her arms (not to mention, they’d probably tickle, which wouldn’t help things a bit!).
((505/500 word challenge, mirror, madness, tower. And feel free to power play Taki a little, Durzell, if you want to test her theory about the jagged ones and her ‘nature affinity.’ It can really do either way for whether it works or not.
