Torth flew low over the Weyr and onto the Shifting Nexus. Her wings were heavy and her heart full of sorrow. She keened as landed on the warm sands and sent pictures to her kin. The images flew by of her on a hunt and then a large Eld’rani attacked her, trying to steal her kill. She had tried to dissuade the cat with a plume of flame, but it would not leave. More images flashed by of the cat trying to go for her throat and Torth sweeping it out of the air with a huge paw. The blow had been fatal for the Eld’rani.
As she picked up her kill to go back to the Weyr the tiny sounds of cubs mewling caught her attention. Picking her way amongst the rocks she soon discovered 7 malnourished cubs. There were no parents in sight. It soon dawned on her that she had just killed their mother, but where was the father? When one Eld’rani parent hunts the other stays behind. Judging by the state of the kits the father must have either died or left, leaving the mother to have to hunt near the cubs so as to not leave them vulnerable.
They were tiny things, all skin and bones. Torth knew what she must do, she had been the one to kill their mother, so now it was up to her to protect the cubs. They would have not done well at the Weyr with no one to bond to, so it was a saving grace that the humans had arrived. Scooping up all 7 kits in her paws she took off for the Weyr.
She stopped sending out the images to her kin. She projected one more thing, “The humans, the little ones need the humans if they are to survive.” A dragon could not care for one so small, but perhaps the humans could.
Laying down on the sands she set the three week old kits on the ground before her. All they could do now was wait and hope that the humans would get here in time.
Rules: - This will be closing to new applicants on 6/12 - You may post as many times between my postings as you wish. - Each person may or may not receive 1 cub max. - Please PM me with your top 3 cubs and why you would like them/think you should get them. - I will be giving you the bare bones of the cubs, but it will be your job to flesh them out. - For your characters: as it is highly unlikely they will know of the bonding custom, it will be your characters job to think on the fly as to what gift they will present which cub. - Minor powerplay may be present
- As of right now the cubs are about the size of a 20lb dog.
A special thanks to Terris for doing the cubs personalities!

Cain looked up at Dorth lightly touched his mind. Torth killed the remaining parent of a litter of Eld'rani and would the bonded humans to come and see about taking them off her hands. They won't survive otherwise. Cain was about to ask why it should bother him about keeping what was so obviously slated for Death alive, when he realized that maybe they weren't slated for the chopping block after all. They were rescued by a dragon instead of being eaten so he figured that maybe Death didn't hold a claim over them. At least not yet. Loving to pull one on his employer every now and then he shrugged. "Sure. Why not? I'm gamed. Might actually be sort of fun. Now what to bring for a gift? Such short notice too."
It was only a few minutes later when Dorth dropped him off at the sands with a reminder to be good. "When am I not?" Deciding not to answer that, Dorth left Cain to his own devices. If he came back missing a few bones...Well, it was no skin off her nose. Least he couldn't get in trouble when he couldn't walk. Tucking the gift under his arm, he edged a bit closer to the kits and looked at Torth. The bundle was wrapped up in an old shirt so as to protect it from the sand. Sitting it down, he back away a bit. Studying the thinness of the kits, he wondered why Dorth had neglected to tell him that food was also be welcomed here.
Maybe someone else will be wiser than him and bring some. If not...Well, he would just have to find something to help them out.

"Akanth, where are you taking me? We are supposed to be looking for..." The dragon lurched downward and began to plummet fast, before spiralling lazily toward the Nexus. He barely stopped to shrug the knight off his shoulders and onto the hot sands before he had taken flight again, leaving the man stranded, confused and feeling more than a little sick.
I'll go find something that produces milk, and try not to puncture it too badly. You go rescue a cub, that's what knights do, isnt it?
Terris looked at the speck in the distance that was a fully grown dragon moments ago, completely lost and confused. "What cub? What are you talking about? Akanth? AKANTH! You come back here right now damn it!" The knight sighed, it was no use talking to the creature, he would just ignore him anyhow.
He looked around, still somewhat annoyed at being so unceremoniously deposited in the sands, and finally saw the small bundle of cubs being watched over dutifully by a dragon. He moved closer, nodding at the large beast.
It was then he noticed the skeleton. His eyes grew wide...how could a thing that dead still be moving? Was he supposed to slay the monster? Was it even a monster? It didn't seem dangerous, in fact, as far as he could tell (skeletons do not appear to have facial expressions), it was showing concern for the cubs.
"Hullo" he said, cautious, but not impolite. He decided, if it was a mindless monster and tried to kill him, he could always fight with it, but there was no point in fighting if it was a friendly animated skeleton.
"Don't suppose you know what's going on exactly?" he asked.

"So they're orphans? That's terrible!" Duzell exclaimed, not for the first time wishing that Nysath would fly faster. Yes, although not for long. Frankly, they may possible be better off now anyway. "How can you say that! Their mother just died!" Yes, and like the gallant hero you think you are, here you come to adopt them and give them a nice comfortable life in whatever large, posh house you build for yourself here. Duzell was about to argue that Nysath was being incredibly callous when they spotted Torth and the Eld'rani cubs. Nysath landed and Duzell slid off his back onto the sand.
Look. You are not even the first one here. The cubs will not lack for homes to chose from. Duzell turned away from his dragon and looked at the others who had beaten them to the cubs. "Is that a skeleton?" Duzell looked at Nysath in alarm. Apparently. "What's that supposed to mean!" Just what I said. Oh, I do hope you brought a gift for the cub you want. It will not come with you otherwise. Duzell glared at Nysath. "Thanks for the warning." He rummaged through the pockets of his coat and sighed. "Hi." Duzell called out to the others. "I guess you're here to help the cubs too?"

Xel was probably never going to become accustomed to flight. He just wasn't built for it, not like his cambion mother who had inherited her own father's demon wings. Civeth wasn't a gentle flier either, all sudden surges forward and abrupt drops in altitude. Or maybe that was just Civeth's way of breaking Xel'zhan of his air-sickness, by overwhelming him with it until he ceased to feel it.
Hang on, little tiefling. Eld'rani cubs need homes.
"What in the name of Sigil is an Eld'rani cub?"
You will see shortly. They have recently lost their mother, a pain you know well. I'm sure you can sympathize.
Civeth knew how to shut Xel up right quick. Xel'zhan had been just a child at the time, but he remembered his mother's screams all too vividly.
"Yeah, well. Just get us there and we'll see what happens."
Civeth dropped Xel in a small crowd of other people. A knight, a skeleton, one other that Xel couldn't immediately place. Xel's tail lashed and twisted around itself, betraying his agitation at the whole situation. Not only was he here to see cubs he didn't even know the nature of, he was going to be learning around people. People had never not boded ill for the tiefling. People meant danger and running for his life. People meant Xel could never be safe and never relax and never stop fleeing.
A friendlier sort would have waved hello or said something in greeting. Xel, on the other hand, slinked off to the side to take a look at the cubs at as much distance from the people as he could manage.

Cain turned his head to look at the knight before shaking it. "Not exactly. Other than apparently we now get to look after whichever cub takes to us. Or maybe forcefully taking one to raise." Staring at the cubs he slowly shook his head. "Though that doesn't sound like a bright idea to me. Probably be better if they came willingly. What about you? You got any more information than that?" It wasn't the first time that Cain had to deal with a knight. Though it was the first time that one didn't attack him straight off the bat. That was a refreshing change of pace.
He didn't miss the arrival of the other two, but he wasn't going to mention either one until they spoke. Which Duzell did. Nodding at him, Cain stretched. "Did either one of you bring anything for them to eat? They don't look to well at the moment and I don't know about you guys, but I would rather have a crack at them before Death takes them away." The skeleton didn't miss the demon going to the shadows. Okay. He had to correct himself as he stared at the other without really turning his head. Xel wasn't a demon. Least not like the ones he was used too. Guess as long as he didn't attack Cain, Cain wouldn't try to kill him. That seemed fair enough to the skeleton.

Torth moved her paws to reveal seven small, soft-spined Eld'rani cubs. Craning her head she inspected those who had arrived. Bringing her snout down close to the skeleton she spoke, "You are an odd one. You ride Dorth so you must be able to bond." Shifting her head she also examined Civeth's rider, "The same goes for you." She nodded her approval. The other two didn't look extremely interesting, but she could tell they would make good bondeds if the cubs chose them.
"Yes, you four will do nicely. Now, come look at the cubs." Before any of them could approach she rumbled darkly, "But do not touch them. They are weak and in need of food. Where is Akanth? They need to eat soon." Softly she scooped up the cubs and laid them before the interested humanoids. Looming just behind she waited to see how they would react to the soft-spined felines.
It had been dark and warm and now it was light and scary. The Fanciful Stud mewled his protest to being put on show. He may be tiny but he would not stand for being left out like this. Yowling further he displayed an image of his mother waiting to feed him. One mans dragon has spoken of food, so he yowled at the man in hopes he could get his dragon to return faster. It had been a few days since his last meal and he was desperately hungry.
At her brothers distress the Cocky queen echoed the need for food, but she demanded something else as well. Flashing a set of pictures of her mother grooming her he expressed the need for one of the humans to cuddle and groom her immediately. To this Torth shushed her. "Patience little one, let the humans, and human-like creatures look at you first."
The Sullen Fawn and Idle Composer had scooted near each other and were now laying entangled in a ball of fur. So weak were they that they couldn't do anything but lie there and mew very quietly, almost too quietly to hear, and use each other for body heat to stay warm.
The Bouncing Trickster was very eager to get the Hyper Imp's tail. While she expressed the same needs as her siblings she just couldn't let a good flicking tail go to waste, it demanded she play with it.
If the Hyper Imp hadn't been so focused on the strange bone-man he may have cared about his sister playing with his tail. He might have even given her a face full of spines, but he was too distracted. He wondered if he could carry one of the bones off, or even if the strange man had something he could eat. Licking his lips he tried to move towards the strange man but stopped after only three short steps due to exhaustion.
The Careful Instigator tried to follow his brother, but instead to examine another man who looked as he supposed a human should, but he didn't feel quiet right. Sneezing he shook his head and tried to waddle towards the man with a tail, but met the same fate as his brother and collapsed panting on the sands.
Torth resisted pulling the cubs back to her. They looked so pitiful that her heart ached. She didn't want them to waste energy so needlessly, but she knew the humanoids had to at least look at the cubs to get some idea of what they might offer. Rumbling softly she encouraged the little Eld'rani cubs to put they're best foot forward in hopes a human might take interest in them. If they didn't they may very well die right here on the sands.
((Sorry about the late post! We unexpectedly got a dog yesterday and he took up all my time!))

Akanth had flown as far as he dared, as quickly as he could when he came across the herd animals. A small flock, one male, two females and three plump babies, grazing in the grassland, unaware of the large predator. It was a shame, he thought, that the three babies would have to perish, but he was unsure if the cubs back at the nexus needed meat, milk or both. He swooped low, separating mothers from young, and quickly ended the lives of the babies before eating as much of them as he could. It was not pleasant, but regurgitated meat would be better than nothing. He then circled back around, slower now his stomach was full, and grabbed a distraught mother in each large paw, and the herd male in his jaws, thinking ahead. They could breed again in a few weeks, and the humans could start a communal herd.
The herd beasts bleated in protest as he soared through the skies, then stood, stupidly on the sands as he deposited them as carefully as he possibly could. The herd male eyed him reproachfully, a nasty looking, but superficial gash on his shoulder where a tooth had penetrated, then herded his ladies as far away from the dragon as he possibly could.
Terris, stop playing with that skeleton and bring me a bag or something! the dragon grumbled, and waited impatiently until the knight did as he was bid, bringing a large empty sack to his bonded.
The dragon noisily regurgitated the three previously devoured herd beasts into the sack.
"Oh, disgusting" Terris complained, but dragged the meat over to the cubs all the same.
I didn't know if they needed meat or milk, and I couldn't carry six live animals, so I did what I could. So sorry if your delicate stomach was offended by what I thought was the only way to quickly solve the problem. Oh, and the milk is still in the beasts. If they need it, you are going to have to get it yourself. he huffed.
Terris ignored him, unbuckled his armour, and promptly took off his shirt before moving quickly toward one of the goat-like creatures. The plan was to rip his shirt into pieces, and soak each with milk to allow the cubs to drink from it...however he did not quite get that far.
Terris...that is the male beast... the dragon said flatly.

Poor things.
Xel'zhan sunk to his knees to get down to the kits' level after the somewhat nerve-wracking surprise of being directly addressed by a dragon that wasn't Civeth.
They were so weak. Helpless. Much like Xel'zhan had been at that age. His mother had been taken from him, too, and for as much prickle and bluster as Xel liked to put between himself and everyone else, he was still overwhelmed with sorrow and sympathy. They were just kids, after all. Or, well, not children so much as cubs or kittens or whatever the young of their species were called. They hadn't asked for any of this. They hadn't chosen this. They weren't even old enough to adapt on their own.
So he knelt by them and reached his tail around to dangle the spaded tip like a toy, and if he got hurt, so be it.
He'd heal. He could only hope they would too.
"Hey there," he murmured to the cubs. "Looks like mister Knight-in-Shining-Armor has something for you lot to eat. Hang in there, little ones."

Cain didn't say anything about the odd comment. He already knew he was odd. He could count the number of living skeletons he had see on one hand. The good news was that given that he bonded to Dorth, he wasn't about to be booted out of here on the chance he couldn't bond. Besides, a bonding didn't always have to happen for the kits to be taken care of after all. Or did it? He was new to this and didn't know anything. If he still had skin, his face would have squished up, but his skull just remained the same. Not knowing the answer to the where is Akanth was. He didn't even know who the dragon was talking about though that was answered when the dragon that bored the knight came back.
Blinking at the image of grooming that went through his mind, he held his hands in a helpless gesture. He wasn't allowed to touch so therefore he couldn't exactly groom. Not to mention that Torth was right. Food first, other things second. Good thing Akanth came back just in time with both meat and milk. Hiding a chuckle as he noticed for which beast the knight had been heading towards before being corrected, he offered his own piece of advice. "Look for the ones with the dangle sacs on their bellies. No sac, you got the wrong one." Yes. He was picking on the knight, but really, it would have been a sight to see him try to milk the male beast. Too bad Akanth stopped him before that happened. Oh well. Better luck next time.
The walk over to the regurgitated meat was short, but it felt a lot longer when Cain saw a few of the cubs trying to get toward them. His heart went out to them as he dipped a bony hand into the contents of the sack. No squeamishness here. "Smart move. Though hopefully they can handle meat. I doubt the cow things can offer enough milk to sate their hunger." Moving to the Hyper Imp who had tried to get near him, he squatted down in front of the cub and held the meat covered hand just in front of his nose. "Think you can eat this?"
He didn't care about so much looking at the cubs so much as making sure they survived long enough to be looked at. Hearing the strange demon talk, he looked over as a tail was dangled in front of one of the cub's nose. "If you don't plan on feeding them your tail, I imagine the meat in the sack that Mister Knight's dragon got would be a better offering." This was said with a matter of fact tone as Cain held still and stayed in what he hoped was easy reach range of the cub. "Want to bet on how long it takes the knight to milk the right cow?"
Yes. He was still picking on Terris. Doubt he would ever let the knight forget it. Cain would stop the teasing and picking on if it really offended the knight, but otherwise, he would continue and even expect the same in return for whenever Terris catches him in an act of foolishness.

Duzell stood around, feeling entirely helpless. He had raced over here to help without actually thinking of anything that the cubs might need. Duzell walked over to the sack of meat. He crinkled his nose in disgust, but the needs of the cubs came first. Scooping up a handful of regurgitated meat, Duzell slowly made his way over to the two cubs who were laying together.
He edged as close as to the cubs he dared, trying his best not to spook the poor things. He pushed the meat over to them and then turned and walked away so they could eat without being concerned about a strange man looming over them.
He chuckled at the skeleton's comment. "I'd take that bet. Although I'm sure these cubs would prefer their food sooner than later." Turning, Duzell walked over to the knight. "Anything I can do to help?" Not that he'd ever milked, well anything, before but it couldn't be too difficult. Right?

Torth rumbled approvingly at the beasts Akanth had brought She was uncertain if the kits could eat meat yet, but it wouldn't hurt them to try, especially in their current state. Gently she lowered her head to nuzzle the Sullen Fawn and Idle Composed awake. "Little ones, Akanth has brought you food and the humans seem eager to feed you." Gently she nudged all of the cubs near the humans. "Feed them and the present to me your gift. You did bring a gift didn't you?" Seeing the lack of gifts readily available she huffed. She should have known that they wouldn't have known the tradition, but there was no time for that now. The kits needed to be bonded and nursed back to health as soon as possible, it wouldn't do them good to delay much longer.
The Idle Composer didn't really want to move, but the smell of food was overwhelming. One of the humans had brought meat over, but he held no interest in it. Standing on shaky paws it tried to make its way over to Terris. He had no want for meat things, only good milk. Flashes of his mother feeding them when through his head and urged him towards his target, he would make it to those udders even if he had to beg Torth to take him. He wished he could hear what the others were saying, he wondered if Terris had a nice voice. He was closer to the female beast now, but grew too tired to make it any further. Mewing pathetically he begged for milk.
Ignoring the meat place before her the Sullen Fawn crawled her way back to Torth. The loss of her brothers warmth had greatly upset her. First her mother had left and now her brother was off after something, she didn't care what. Her belly gurgled in hunger, but she just didn't feel like eating. Maybe a nice nap would do her good. Laying her head down she slowly drifted off to sleep on the warm sands.
The Careful Instigator saw his siblings abandon the meat and dove straight for it. It had helped that he was near by, but the small trip to the meat made him cranky. "And I supposed you expect me to eat these large chunks?" He could barely fit his mouth around one of the pieces, sure there were others that he could eat with ease, but he wouldn't just let the human walk away while leaving a piece to big for him.
The tail was just too good of a toy to pass up. She could play with her siblings tail any day, but this was was new and interesting! It looked funny, nothing like her own, but that didn't make it any less of a good toy. The Bouncing Trickster slowly turned her self for a better aim and then swung her paw out and caught the dangling tail between her two front paws. She was careful not to pierce it with her claws, but her teeth were another story. She clamped down on the tail and gave it a good tug. With the tail still in her mouth she looked up at the humanoid it belonged to, "Food?"
Following the example of his sister the Hyper Imp examined the thing that had been offered to him. It smelled like the meat his mother would eat, but he had never tried any. Throwing caution to the wind he bit down on one of the fingers holding the meat and pulled back hard. With a small pop he stole the meat and finger with it. Dragging it slowly backwards he settled in and began to eat. It wasn't like the creaminess of milk, but it had a deep rich tang that he loved. Finishing what was on the bone he took it back to it's owner and deposited at Cain's feet. Images flashed by of Cain feeding him more, "Does it come from the hand?" He noticed that this one didn't have flesh covering him like the other humans, so maybe this on had a special food hand too.
Growling the Cocky Queen was very displeased. First Torth had reprimanded her and now she wouldn't even be groomed! Her grumbling didn't make any matters better. None of the humanoids had even approached her. Flicking her tail she began to move over to where the meat sacks were, if no one was going to bring food to her then she wasn't going to sit around and wait.
The fanciful studs mouth had begun to water the second her saw the female milk beast. Readily following after the Idle Composed he scratched his way across the sands. Easily passing his brother he eventually made it to where Terris was trying to milk one of the beasts and snickered. Even he, a three week old cub could tell what beast held milk and which didn't. Yowling loudly at Terris he made his demand for milk quiet clear. His brother, the Idle composer, had made it over to Terris now too and both were vying for the first drink.

Terris looked puzzled for a moment, ducking his head under the beast's abdomen, he snorted, disgusted as he came face to er...face... with something that was clearly not a set of udders. He grumbled, shot a glare at his sniggering dragon, and huffed at the skeleton who was making fun of him, though he held no malice toward him.
"I'm a knight, not a farmer" he muttered, as he rounded on the fatter of the two females and made an attempt to capture and subdue her. It didn't take long, as her udders were heavy with milk, and she could not move quickly so burdened. He leaped onto her before she could move away from him, wrapped one arm firmly over her chest to hold her in place until he was certain she was not going to try to escape, and with his other hand (which was holding the now torn up rags that used to be his shirt) he began squeezing her teats in a downward motion, soaking what was once his shirt with milk.
His blue eyes, usually hard, rested on the cubs that had crawled toward him, a gentleness he didnt know he posessed softening him as he lifted them and offered the milk-soaked cloths to them. He would have let them suckle from the beasts themselves, but he was fairly certain the herd animals would not take to creatures with sharp teeth and claws the same way they would their own young.
This was demonstrated when the creature he had been milking caught the scent of the babies. Her nostrils flared and she bleated, a worried, but not yet alarmed sound, and moved to seek the comfort of the herd male. The herd male bleated back, his eyes narrowing into tiny slits as he, too focussed on the knight and the cubs, and then he was there, herding her away toward the second female, as far away from the humans, and predatory cubs as he could.
Terris could hear some of the other cubs chatting, and assumed that they had found the meat. Good, if they could eat solids, that meant they were probably ok, at least for now, and there were other humans around to look after them anyhow, his focus was entirely on the two cubs that had sought him out, and he was going to make sure they were full of milk before he did anything else.
As the cubs ate, his mind wandered to what the wild dragon had said about objects being gifted. It was not a ceremony he had been prepared for, and he was at a loss as to what, if anything, he had that might interest a cub.
Your armour would probably work Akanth drawled lazily in his mind. You don't need it anyway, all it does is slow you down. We went over this earlier The knight sighed, but the dragon was right. There was nobody here that was trying to skewer him with a sword. He now battled from the skies, on the back of a dragon, and plate armour was not really helpful for that, besides, he felt like he was roasting alive every time he stepped onto the hot sands of the nexus.
He nodded, placed the cubs on the sands a moment, careful to ensure the rags that were once his shirt were still easily within reach should they need more milk, and approached Torth. He had not approached a dragon other than Akanth before, and was not sure of protocol in doing so, so, as he always did when unsure of the correct way of addressing someone, he bowed deeply, his gaze low, and then, presented his helmet as a gift to the cubs.
