Duzell returned from gathering his antidote. He just needed to apply the ointment to the infected area on Cain’s arm and hopefully the crystal would stop spreading. Of course this was Cain, the living skeleton. He could not be certain how anything would work on him. He arrived back in the attic to see Cain, arm covered in an expanding blue shield like crystal. He appeared to be holding a smooth tan Osidae. The Osidae was squiming, trying to escape Cain’s grasp, but was not angry enough to start biting. Duzell set the antidote down and grabbed one of the crates. He removed the lid and held it out to Cain. “Why don’t you drop that one in here and I’ll take care of your arm.” Once they were clear of the spider Duzell set to work applying the antidote to Cain’s arm. Although the cream did not seem to reduce the amount of crystal any it did look like it had stopped spreading. “Well, that looks like all I can do for you right now. If you aren’t in any pain you want to help round up the rest of those spiders? I don’t want it to sound like I’m taking advantage of you, but well, you’re the only one of use that can’t die from a spider bite.” Duzell grabbed the crate Cain had placed the tan Osidae in, placed the lid back on top and went back to collecting spiders. He turned to Leyora. "Thanks for these. If you want to wait down here ad hand up crates I'll be sure to catch a few Osidae for you. Although you'll be missing out on all the fun." He smirked at Terris. "Same goes for you if you're not going to freeze on us."
The Osidae that Tam’kar had been placing into a crate did not appreciate being tossed about by a spirit fox. They hissed as they were place into a nearby crate. A few tried to snap at the kitsune. Just because they were gentler than their jagged cousins did not mean one could do anything they wanted with them. Unfortunately for Tam’kar, his spider collecting was in vain. As he had not replaced the lid on the crate as soon as the Osiade were placed they began to climb right back out, hissing and disappearing into their nests. Tam’kar was definitely flunking Osidae catching-101.
The jagged red female was having no part of the cage Taki was trying to get her into. She hissed and reared up her front legs in a warning. She may have enjoyed the images Taki was projecting to her, but her nest was here. She did not see the hat behind her however. As she was scooped up he entrenched herself in the hat. She would not leave unless forced. The smooth spiders struggled against the vines Arlene had sent against them. One smooth forest female in particular had taken offense to the vines pulling her off her perch and had managed to bite one of the offending vines. Although the color change was nearly imperceptible, soon the vine was transformed into pure crystal. Although she was still trapped, the Osidae did feel better about winning her battle against the vine. Furthermore, she completely blended with the crystal, a good as a chameleon at blending in.
The hot pink smooth cautiously moved around the fuzzy, alien landscape. Her exploration was cut short by a loud screech. She hissed and retreated to the back of the strange ground. She backed up until she hit the wall. After a few seconds of hissing she determined that nothing was trying to eat her. She allowed the soothing voice to calm her and the strange hand to lift her off the ground and place her into the cage.

Tam’kar thought he was doing rather well, gently lifting the smooth osidae and depositing them into the box… until he happened to look into said box with another in his mouth (which seemed awfully familiar, incidentally) to realize his error. And why the one he held was so familiar. Talk about a literally hollow victory! With a sigh, he put the one he now had inside, then closed the lid and for good measure sat on it! He would definitely NOT be relating this part of the adventure any time soon!
Taki had to blink in surprise when the crimson osidae tumbled into the curve of her hat and latched there. That wasn’t quite what she meant to do! Though in hindsight, she had to laugh to herself at her lack of foresight. Briefly a little tune that her old bard friend had hummed whenever such a humorous situation occurred flitted through her mind, then she shook it off and began trying to figure out how to get the spider into the cage, without getting bitten. Clearly her Nature’s Affinity had its limits with these beautiful yet so dangerous creatures! Put the opening of the hat over the cage and shake? Likely to aggravate it more! Try to use the hat as a barrier and push her in? The material was only cloth, and no security against fangs.
As she thought, she saw Duzell return with something that he rubbed on Cain’s arms – ah, good! The medicine he’d spoken of! That was a relief and a load off her mind. Despite Cain’s reassurances, a small part of her had been concerned that the crystal would spread over his joints and freeze them solid, as it were. Also, since he had the antidote with him, should the worst happen to someone they’d have a chance! It seemed the others were handling their osidae well enough, and thus far no more jagged as she could see. Good!
As she looked at the female in her hat, something she dearly wanted back soon as she felt strange without it on her head, she had an idea! It was so disinclined to go into the cage, and was defensive of its home, why not? She carefully turned her hat, looking to the nearest crystal-encased creature and put the entrance right at the biggest hole she could find. If things went according to plan, the osidae would retreat back into its den, then she could put the cage over the entrance and try to tip it in safely! Granted, it wasn’t the most elegant, or spider-pleasing of ideas, but at least it was an idea. And, if worst came to worse, maybe she could find something to secure to the opening of the den itself, and carry the whole thing out! Certainly, getting to keep its den would please the osidae female. A bit timidly, she reached out with her Affinity again, trying to coax it in and reassuring her that if she could, she would be able to keep her splendid den. Though Taki might have to get some help carrying it. Maybe if she could get it into the cage, she could take the den with her too? Duzell certainly would have no need for such in his attic.

Amerlan lifted the hot pink Osidae gently out of her hair and into the cage waiting below. Now that Artemis had shut up the spider was very compliant. She was very glad she hadn't been bitten. Seeing the state Cain's arm was in terrified her. Sure Duzell had brought the antidote over, so a bite wouldn't be lethal, but she was sure it would be painful, and the recovery would be long and could quite possibly devastate the muscles beyond use.
Closing the door of the cage so that the Osidae couldn't escape, and to darken the space within the cage so that the poor thing could stay calm and out of the light, she then set it down on the ground against the wall. She didn't want anyone to trip over and knock the cae about, lest the poor Osidae receive a bigger fright than it had already had.
With that problem taken care of she could once again inspect the crevice on the wall. From her view point it was like looking through an eye-pin, utterly useless for trying to see much of anything. Scooting closer to the crevice until she was directly in front of it she tried to peer in. It was plainly obvious that not one, but many Osidae had crammed themselves into the crevice. "Artemis come over here. I need some light." Surprisingly the bird complied, although she stayed hovering in the air and none to close to the crevice. "Woah. I seem to have found a jackpot." She called out to anyone who was in the vicinity. "I think I'm going to need a few cages brought over! Maybe we can get the Osidae to run straight into them!" If some cages were brought over she would have Artemis fly as close as she could to the crevice so that the Osidae would run from the then bright area into the darkness of the cages.

Cain nodded at Duzell before tossing the little tan into the box. Holding out his arm, he watched Duzell smear the crystal with...Something. Cain decided not to think about it as it worked and the crystal had stopped spreading. Moving his elbow and wrist, he as relieved to realize that the crystal had not spread that far. "Thank Duzell. It is enough for now. I'll take a chisel and a hammer to it later. You want the shards for anything?" Not really waiting for much of a response, he did a double check on the knight to make sure Terris was not going into a panic attack before crawling back up into the attic.
Seeking out Taki, he did not notice the crimson jagged she was trying to catch anywhere. "Did the little crimson take off or..." He trailed off as he noticed a jagged hissing and such off in a corner. Picking up a cage, he nudged it toward the spider. Just cause he could get bit, did not mean he wanted a repeat of the performance. "So...Are we even close to halfway done or are they going to turn the tide of the battle and make us all into their personal nest things?"

Having been divested of the spider, and that spider being neatly stowed away in a crate, Terris was finally able to make sense of what was going on. It was not that he hated the beasts, but having one in the small of his back had creeped him out a fair bit. Everything seemed to be moving so quickly, but his mind, squirming at the idea of spiders, and being around them, in close quarters, was just not working right.
He realised he had missed a lot of what was going on, and, also realising the action was not on the ground floor but in the attic, he took one last glance inside the hollow confines of the barrel, checking on the osidae that had been deposited there, and slowly made his way up the ladder.
What he saw when he finally squeezed himself into the attic did not please him. Swarms of spiders ran this way and that, like brightly coloured christmas baubles on legs...many legs...many skittery, crawly, horrible legs...okay, maybe Terris did have a problem with spiders after all..
You will have to get over that, I want you to bring as many of those home as you can. The familiar voice of Akanth rang loud and clear in his mind, and he groaned.
"Why in the world would you want even one of these...things" he responded through their shared link.
"I cant think of anything worse than having a bunch of those crawly beasts running around" he shuddered again, glared at a spider as it skittered past him, then cast a sullen eye about the small room.
I have my reasons the dragon replied and Terris felt the mental link close, effectively ending the discussion. He pictured Akanth, sitting on his ledge in the Nexus, the sun warming his soft brown hide. He'd be looking quite pleased with himself right now, the knight guessed.
The only thing that stopped Terris from screeching when he felt the spindly legs of a large red spider skittering over his foot was the fact that he knew Cain and duzell were not far away. He was unwilling to deal with the merciless teasing he would get by the skeleton, and, for reasons unknown to him, was unwilling to look weak in front of the innkeeper, so instead, he clenched his jaw, and grabbed the beast by the abdomen, ensuring the pointy bits were well away from anything they could sink into.
"Looks like I've got one" He said, unenthusiastically.
"I'll just go back down the ladder and...er...put it in the barrel" he finished, and disappeared back into the corridor.
Was he going to go back up there? No...not if he could help it.

Arlene stretched a hand out to stroke the vines. They were the only thing really familiar in this world for her. Spiders that turned you into crystal? Dragons? It was so much to take in often. She continued to hunt and pull them down since she wasn't trying to hurt anything. Arlene... Promise-of-Roses... those were her inner selves. Rowan was the outer. The spider hunt was the priority for now but later... did she really belong here?

Bemused, Leyora watched as Cain and Duzell safely got the spider off of Terris, who was looking none too well at the moment. Shaking her head at Duzell's thanks, she smiled and answered, "No problem... at least with the crates. Terris also brought some barrels which will come in handy, from the looks of things." Grabbing a barrel and a couple of cages, Leyora moved to the ladder and started picking smooth osidae up as gently as she could and easing them into the crate. even with the cages nearby, she skirted away from the jagged osidae, for now. As pretty as Cain's arm was, she had no inclination to join him in a crystallized state. She would almost rather that the venom blistered the skin or made a person see things, as the undassa venom did.
Thinking of Cain, she paused in her efforts to steal a peek at Duzell medicating the arm. She let out a sigh of relief that her friend seemed to be safe from turning completely into a statue, at least. She stepped out of the way to let Cain pass as he went back up to help the ladies collect more spiders. She hoped everyone one was still alright up there. At least now there was a medicine to help fight against the bites, though. She would have to get his recipe later and see if she could make enough to send home with everyone that came away with creepy, crawly pets later.
As Duzell spoke again, Leyora shook her head again. "I'm sure I'll stay down here. Someone needs to protect our knight, after all." She winked and then took a conservative approach regarding space in the attic. "Besides there are plenty of eight legged guests finding their way down here. That suggests there might not be as much room up there as we first guessed. I'll round up the escapees and Terris, if you are okay with it, maybe you can send crates and cages up the ladder?" She was using a gentle tone to try covering up the somewhat bossy attitude she seemed to be acquiring. This well fed, less shy and quiet, happy persona, seemed almost like a forgery of the thin, glum thing that had slipped through the Nexus mere months ago.
Not waiting for an answer from either of the gentlemen, Leyora caught sight of a cluster of osidae and went to scoot her barrel closer to them. They were packed together too closely to identify one color from another or whether they were smooth or jagged, so she knelt and very carefully set about untangling legs and trying to lift first one and then the next osidae up and settle it in the appropriate container. It was tedious work and more than once she pulled her hands back, in a mini heart attack as one spider or another hissed at her, but she just kept plugging away. Every so often she looked back to be sure that Terris was alright. He looked like he could use a stiff drink. She didn't have anything like than in her wreck of a kitchen right now, but when things calmed down a little more, she would see about some tea, if he would have it.

Duzell was glad that the antidote worked quite quickly. He had not yet had the chance to try it out, but there was no way he was telling Cain that he was using him as a guinea pig. Besides, for what it was worth Nysath had assured him it would work. The skeleton looked fine though, just slightly more blue. He shook his head “I can’t think of anything I can use them for, although they are pretty. Maybe someone more artistically inclined could find a use for them.”
Duzell carefully placed the bowl with the antidote inside on the ground next to Leyora. “Can you watch this for me? I’d hate to take it upstairs and lose it in the dark, or worse spill it and then need it.” He then climbed back into the attic lugging a few spider cages with him. Hearing Amerlan’s request he leaned back down through the opening and asked Leyora to hand on of the crates to him. “Just dump the tan one into Tam’kar’s crate so I can get an empty one, please? Amerlan is most likely going to fill this one.”
After Leyora passed him the crate he carried it across the attic to Amerlan. “Fabulous idea! Just don’t get too greedy and stick your arm in that mouse size hole. I’d hate for you to get bit.” Duzell was starting to think perhaps he should have made more of the antidote. He wasn’t worried about it spoiling; Nysath had said that even if it dried out a bit of water would make it effective again. He was more concerned that the plants required to make it were rather rare and the last thing he wanted to happen was to run out when he needed them. Maybe when this was all over he would talk to Arlene to see if she could save him from vegetation poverty and help him plant some.
As Artemis neared the area Amerlan had intended it was obvious her scheme had worked. Hoardes of spiders fled the light and became caught in the cages and crate that Duzell had brought over. Nearly that entire section of Osidae nests was soon cleared of the crystal spiders. It would seem that the humans were finally making headway against the crystal invaders.
As Arlene stroked her vines the green Osidae managed to free herself from the now crystalized vine. She climbed along the vine until she came face to face with the woman that had created the fascinating plants. The Osidae was not intelligent enough to comprehend what most of what was happening in her home, but she was certain that right here on this vine with this mage was where she ought to be.
Duzell was surprised to see Terris up in the attic. Duzell was beginning to consider himself a bit more than an amateur spider handler, but he understood that not everyone was as comfortable with the creatures as he was. Duzell was certainly correct in reckoning that Terris was one of those people. In that case, he admired his bravery at even coming into the attic and facing his fear. Then, as quickly as he had appeared, Terris grabbed a spider and disappeared from the attic. Oh well, at least he had tried. Hopefully he would help Leyora collect the stragglers.
Duzell then spotted Taki attempting to remove the crimson female from her hat. Seeing what she was planning he walked over. “Oh, that might work. Just let me know if you need any help okay?” As Taki neared the nest the red female began to grow agitated. It squirmed in Taki’s hat as if trying to escape something. As Taki attempted to dump her into the nest the jagged Osidae lept away and landed in the cage. That was…odd to say the least. She began hissing at the nest and reared up her front legs defensively, but made no move to leave her cage. The nest, well…was that a nest? A quick assessment would show that it certainly looked like a nest. It was awfully small compared to the larger structures that were threatening to cover the attic. Actually, it was only about three and a half feet in diameter. White jagged crystals completely covered the small nest. Taki might have been much more interested in the fact that she had finally captured her red prize than the strange nest except for one thing: the nest twitched. Slowly at first, like someone waking up from a long nap, the crystal began stretching eight jagged white legs out in all directions. Black eyes searched the attic in front of it. They locked onto Taki and determined her to both be the one that awoke it and its next meal.
All around smaller Osidae fled from this incarnation of terror. They had known it was here and had done their best to avoid it. Born here in the attic, the jagged giant did little more than eat and sleep. But, while there may have been enough food for the small Osidae, the giant had taken to cannibalism to satisfy its enormous appetite. The other Osidae rained from the attic right into the safety of Leyora’ crates or even leaping into Amerlan’s crates and cages in a hope of escaping the fate of becoming this monstrosity’s next meal.
Duzell stared in horror as the giant finished stretching and began shuffling towards. Fortunately for those in the attic, although it was quite large it was not very fast. As it lunged at Taki Duzell reached out and yanked her out of the way. Later, Duzell would hope that he was not too rough with her but for now he was just concerned with making sure his attic did not become their final resting place. The spider shot past them and crashed into a nearby nest. It would appear its reflexes were not the best either. Duzell yelled for Cain, knowing that he would not die if the thing got him. “Cain! Keep that monster away from Taki!.” Duzell ran over to the attic hatch and yelled down. “Terris, I need you up here now! Bring your swords. Leyora, go get the biggest crate you can find. And hurry, both of you.” If they couldn’t catch the thing he certainly hoped Terris would be able to kill it. Or Cain or Amerlan or anyone really. He hoped his yelling had alerted Arlene and Amerlan to the new danger, but he could not tear his eyes away from the monster Osidae to check.

Cain watched the smaller spiders scurry away and out. Just as he was wondering what could cause that and what that meant for them, he heard Duzell shout out for him. Turning, if he could his eyes would have widen at the size of that particular spider. And it just had to be jagged didn't it?
"Sure thing. Taki, if you can use that affinity to try and keep it calm, it will hopefully just stay focus on me." Maybe not the best plan, but he did not want it going after her or the others. Better to keep it just agitated enough to go after one target instead of getting it riled up enough to go after them all. "Hey beastie beastie. Why don't you just focus on me here? I'm fairly edible."
He waved his crystallized arm at him, as if showing him just how edible his bones were. He unhooked the arm in question and holding it, started to poke at the giant. "Come get the tasty meal." Maybe the bigger osidae would think his arm was another spider and tried to eat it. Or maybe he would just think it was food in general. Point is, Cain hoped it would be enough to keep the spider on him and away from Taki.

Taki's eyes had widened in sheer terror as the giant spider (well, giant compared to her: it was just about as big as she was!) uncurled its legs and seemed to glare at her. Well, now she knew why the jagged red had been so panicked! Quickly she snapped the cage closed, then tried to make her legs take the advice of the smaller osidae and move! But she had never seen anything like this before, had never seen anything look at her with such intensity, and it definitely didn't seem friendly. For a costly moment, she was paralzed!
Then Duzell snatched her up and out of harms way, making her gasp but effectively snapping her out of her stupor and setting her down no worse for wear. She gasped a thank you, backing away as the white still seemed to be looking right at her. Then she registered both Cain and Duzell working to protect her, and heard the shout to Terris. Seeing her friends rallying boosted her own confidence, and from behind the shelter they provided she reached out with her empathy, trying to calm the agitated beast of a spider.
*You don't want to hurt anyone,* she murmured, again not really needed but helping her stay focused, even as her legs tensed to try and dodge should it lunge at her again. *It won't be good for you to be here. We're trying to help. Just be calm. Calm and quiet.* Glancing between those still in the attic, she couldn't help the thought: {Please, everyone be careful!}
Tam'kar meanwhile was down at the bottom of the ladder having a veritable kitsune fit at not being able to get up there to defend his bonded. Grumbling against not having been formed with wings too, his head darted back and forth frantically, looking for a way up, then even beginning to try and climb the ladder, using all four limbs and even his mouth to make the ascent.

Terris didn't need to be asked twice. He may have hated spiders, but there was no way he was going to let his friends get attacked by them either. He moved up the ladder quickly, and very nearly fell right back down again when he caught a glimpse of the giant jagged creatue.
No doubt Akanth would want this...thing...if he could manage it.
"Morse, go to the saydar pens and get me that runty little chick that doesn't want to grow" he called out through his link as he squeezed himself through the opening and into the attic.
He looked around quickly, grabbed the largest cage he could find, opened the door and, picking it up by the back end, with the open mouth facing the osidae, moved to get between the creature and Taki.
"I have something that might pass as spider food on the way. I think if we put that inside this cage, then gently prod that...thing...it may be persuaded to enter of its own accord, otherwise..." he glanced at his swords.
It did not take long for morse to arrive, a baby saydar, protesting horribly clasped firmly in his jaws.
An observer would see that the little beast was not long for this world, its head, large and bulbous sat atop a spindly neck that could barely support its weight, its body small and frail. The bird was half the size of its clutchmates.
Terris looked at the little bird apologeitcally.
"I sort of hoped he'd get better, but I think he's just defective" he explained, gently taking the little bird and placing it inside the cage. He hoped, if the spider took the bait, that it would be over quickly for the baby saydar.

Taki cringed, seeing the deformed baby Saydar and understanding the intent even before Terris put it in the cage. It was tragic, but the proper course of action when nature would likely do the same thing in the wild. That didn’t stop it from making her heart sink into her belly, though. She forced herself to focus, and shut off her empathy from the saydar, not wanting to feel its emotions.
{Concentrate on the osidae. Keep it calm so it doesn’t go wild and start rampaging on all of us. This is the best way.} She couldn’t help but shudder though; she could clearly remember the emotional upheaval that had nearly taken her at the kurbok birthing in the desert. Then, though, she had been using her empathy at a wide net, feeling for any who weren’t too far gone, and hadn’t had enough time to draw it back in. At least this time, she was more ready.
Tam’kar growled as he continued to fight his way up the ladder, through the throng of osidae, both jagged and smooth, that were fleeing whatever terror was up there even as Terris went past him on the way up. While he’d have appreciated (and considered even hitching) a lift, the urgency in Duzell’s voice, hearing Cain’s taunting words, and the brief moment of hesitation he’d seen in Terris when he reached the attic told clear that haste for the knight was important, and warranted. He’d felt the surge of fear from Taki, though she’d sent a quick gasp of a message through their Bond to tell him she was safe, thanks to Duzell quick reactions, and now Cain and Terris’ actions. The kitsune would have to remember to thank them whole-heartedly when this was over and done with. His paws scrambled on the rungs, but finally he made it up into the attic just a hair’s breadth before Morse returned with the saydar – where he stopped dead, seeing what had arisen! It was huge! Duzell, Cain, and Terris had made a semi-circle around it, with Taki huddling behind Duzell watching the giant osidae intently, her lips moving in the silent murmur that Myrgwae used. He guessed she was trying to affect it, likely to keep it calm and pacified. Tucked behind her on the floor at her feet, almost protectively situated even behind the little fae, was a smaller cage holding a jagged red osidae. Tam’kar had to mentally chuckle, despite the intensity of the situation: leave it to Taki to think of such an aggressive little arachnid, when she herself was threatened by something as big as she was!
As the cage was brought up and the bait placed within, Tam’kar slipped like a white shadow along the edges of the now spider-clear room to crouch protectively in front of Taki, fur bristling and growling softly.
If it somehow gets by them, he reassured her, it won’t get by me!
*Be careful, Tam’kar,* Taki murmured privately, concentrating hard. *If it bites you, it’ll turn you to crystal. Look at Cain’s arm!* Sparing a glance, Tam’kar shivered. If it did that to bone, it could certainly do worse to him! Well, if it could catch him, that is. His only problem was, if it did lunge at Taki or he had to help fight it, what could his teeth do against a creature made of such hard-looking crystal?

Amerlan grinned at Artemis as she glowed brightly. Their plan had been successful! "See I told you they wouldn't hurt you. Much more afraid of you than you are of them."
The Spirit Animal just shot her a death glare as she hovered several feet off the ground. There was no way in hell she'd be coming down with the place turning into an ocean of the crystal creatures.
Amerlan's cage filled up rapidly as the Osidae sought to find refuge from the blinding light. When there was barely any room left in it she closed it up and tossed the cage up to Artemis. "Catch them! You wouldn't harm a helpless creature would you?" She struggled to contain her laughter as the now fairly solid owl caught the top of the cage in her talons screeching the whole time about "asshat bonds" and "feather plucking the elf". Amerlan watched as Artemis dove back down the stairs, she assumed the bird had set the cage down on the floor. However, the light of the spirit animal still shone from the entrance to the attic. It looked like she would still be willing to provide light, but not reenter the attic herself.

Arlene grimaces at the abrupt death screech of one of the birds dying. She couldn't do that to any of her sayder. She hugged the little osidae to her chest. She wasn't going to let this little one that decided to be with her get hurt. She ducked into her plants letting the soothing feeling coat her. Even predator plants were calming for her. Her ears twitched a bit hearing the reason as she quietly tried herding some more smooths to safety. That hurt even worse that a sayder was killed not for food and hides but just because it was "defective". Would they do the same to her if she showed weakness and appeared defective? How many times had she heard that comment from her own dragon who felt she was defective because air travel wasn't for her. Even going from Ireland to Canada was by boat thank you very much.

The sudden sensation of distress from elsewhere in the attic momentarily shook Taki's empathic focus on the giant Osidae, made her shudder and her ears lay back against her hat as her Affinity slipped a bit. A sense of distrust and a bit of fear, and maybe even a little anger?
Roughly she shook her head. She couldn't lose her focus now, not with the giant osidae threatening. She'd find out what had happened, who it was, later if she could. She'd definitely try her best to do just that. It would go against her nature to not, after all! Taking a deep breath, she regrouped her Affinity to keeping the jagged giant calm so it wouldn't attack.
