Taki sat up in bed, shivering from head to toe. It was nighttime, and outside all was still. Inside her home in town, all was still. But the Myrgwae still couldn’t sleep. Her mind was racing like a while river, her empathy felt out of control, slipping through her mental grasp. She’d never experienced anything like this before! Ever since she was ‘young,’ in as much as her kind could be called young or old, she’d had a knack with controlling her empathic powers. That was why she’d never needed to Link with another person for balance. It had just come naturally, with ease.
But tonight she got a taste of what is might have been like for a Myrgwae who didn’t have her same control. She’d awoken from a sound sleep with a thundering heart and trembling, and now held her knees tight to her chest, a leaf blown in a gale-force wind.
*Who’s feeling like that?* she whimpered into the air. *So chaotic! It’s like every emotion I know of all at once!* Tam’kar, who’d awoken when she had, jumped up onto the bed next to her and curled around her, wrapping her with his tails and nuzzling her arm. Feeling the touch she put her arms around him and held him close, burying her face against his fur.
Taki? came the call from Wounded Knight as the Kurbok looked in. Usually he slept in the open room of her house, but clearly her mental turmoil had awoken him, and he’d come, like the gallant hero he was, to see what was wrong.
*I’m sorry!* she gasped. *I – I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I’ve never felt like this before!* A shuddering gasp ripped from her, and she shook harder. The Kurbok came over to touch her shoulder with his nose.
I can tell that this is greatly distressing to you, he murmured soothingly, steadily, but perhaps it is best if you try to push through the barrage you are receiving, and try to focus on its cause. Then you can try to do something about it. His suggestion made sense, so Taki nodded and shut her eyes, holding tight to Tam’kar and trying to draw strength from Wounded Knight’s presence, attempting to trace the sensation back to its source. It was hard, like fighting against the wind while climbing up a steep hill, but eventually she found a single focus through it all, an emotion that wrapped itself end upon end into a single thought: come.
Without speaking, Taki climbed up and put on her boots and hat, and departed with the kitsune Spirit Animal and Kurbok following close behind. They were silent as they followed her, supporting her as she worked through this while making sure that they were on hand should this be something dangerous that their Bonded couldn’t defend herself from. Taki was nearly in a trance, beckoned onward without real awareness of where the went. It was like she knew the path by heart, but had forgotten it, as her empathy and whatever was calling her formed a myriad of bridges between them with only one goal of uniting them. She finally found herself again under the star- and moonlight as she stood before a thick stand of trees a little ways out of town, blinking in a dazed fashion as she looked in. The trees’ canopy cut off most light, but someone she just knew that whatever had summoned her, lay within, waiting. Taki reached back and instantly Tam’kar came to her side, with Wounded Knight coming up to the other, and they stepped in to meet whatever was within.
(Word count 609/500, Bridges, forgotten, racing. And as a note, I know I have said before that because of her kind’s lack of ‘normal reproduction’ her bonding to a dragon would be strange, due to the mating flight. But I realized that just because she wouldn’t experience it the same as other riders, wouldn’t mean Taki was ignorant to such things. I just say this in case whoever controls the lucky dips decided/rolls for this to be a dragon, though I’ll be thrilled with whatever she finds!)
