Beleth is late for an important event and must go between to get to her destination in time....whether this is between time as well as place is entirely up to you, as is the event.

Beleth leapt from the top of one dune, gliding to the next with an ease that pleased her greatly. She’d come out here, without her bonded actually, to practice flying. She was getting close to being old and strong enough to do so, but didn’t want Taki to see all the crash landings she’d made when starting out. The little rider would fuss and worry, and she didn’t want that. Better to do this in secret, then show her once she’d mastered the skill!
Briefly, she mused as she took to the air again, beating her wings and getting a good liftoff, just how she was going to manage carrying Taki on her back. Taki was so small and light, that she already barely felt her when the Myrgwae leaned against her side while they rested together. And Tam’kar, as light as he was, was able to easily take her from her feet. The winds she felt now pushing at her face and body would have no trouble blowing her right off! While they had been at the lake, Taki had spoken with the rider called Cain, and he had offered a couple of suggestions, but one of them hinged on the cooperation of the knight, Terris, and Beleth didn’t know how he would take being asked to do a task for them. The brown dragon had never met the man personally, and that meant she had her doubts about him.
She was so lost in thought that it actually took her a few moments to realize she had been airborne for about four dragon-lengths, and hadn’t yet come down. With a gasp, she looked beneath to see that yes, she was flying! Truly flying! Taki would be so proud!
As if on cue, Beleth felt a call through her bond from her rider. Her eyes widened in shock as she realize it was a query of her location. She was late for her first lesson with Dorth! The kind older dragon had offered to help Beleth get used to holding Taki while she flew, as an alternative to the saddle and in case Terris wouldn’t or couldn’t make a harness for her to wear, but she’d been so caught up in her flight practice that she’d lost track of time. Quickly she turned and began winging her way back towards the lake where they’d agreed to meet, but it would take her a long time to get back there, even flying as fast as she was able. While it would definitely help her being able to actually fly for these lessons, she should have been more aware of her surroundings. What kind of protector for Taki would she be if she let a little thing like the glories of flying (ok, it was seriously pleasurable) distract her?
And how would Dorth take her tardiness? Would she understand, or be angry and refuse to teach her? Perhaps it was a little of her rider’s desire to not displease others seeping into the dragon, but she desperately wanted to not upset the first dragon she’d really felt anything like a friendship with. But how could she –
Between! She’d heard stories of it, knew some of the older dragons did it. Winking from one place to another, in the blink of an eye. If she could manage to go between certainly she wouldn’t be that late! Or at least not that late. But… she’d only just mastered flying. Could she go between so soon? And if she got lost….
Again she felt Taki’s call, and sent one back that she was on her way. The choices it seemed were being horribly late, or risking a first flight between. Beleth huffed to herself.
I won’t get lost between. Not with Taki’s bond to strong. And I know where she is, at the lake. I know it well. That’s all you need to go between properly, desire and a strong mental image. Dragons have been doing it for ages! And I can do it to! Summoning up instinct and courage, she felt for the intangible cold of between and threw herself forward.
The utter void of between was almost mind-shattering! She hadn’t been fully prepared for it, just an adolescent and just having learned to fly. But even though she couldn’t feel wind or air, couldn’t feel her own skin, there was one thing she could feel: Taki. And her Myrgwae was calling to her. With a final thrust, she burst out of between and into the warm sunshine over the lake, where beneath her Taki, Dorth, and Cain waited. Taki ran to meet her as she made a somewhat rough landing, giving the dragon as much of a hug a she was able for their respective sizes and smiling up at her.
*You were flying!* she cheered. *And… you appeared out of nowhere! That was amazing!*
That was between, Taki-Mine, Beleth replied. And as soon as I’m comfortable flying with you, it will allow us to travel where we want as fast as your heart desires. But first, lets see if I can manage to land without squishing you. Taki giggled, and dragon and rider headed for their first lesson.
